Laptop disassembly tips. Toshiba Tecra 9100 notebook guide

STEP 1

Turn the unit upside down.
Remove the battery.
Remove two screws securing the memory cover.
Remove one screw securing the HDD cover, remove the cover and HDD.
Remove the DVD-rom drive.

STEP 2

Remove the memory modules.

STEP 3

Remove one screw securing the Blue Tooth card cover and remove the card.
Remove all marked screws on the bottom.

STEP 4

Turn the computer right side up.
Insert a thin object under the securing strip and lift it up.
Be careful, it may be very tight.

STEP 5

Remove the securing strip.

STEP 6

Remove two screws securing the keyboard.

STEP 7

Disconnect the keyboard cable on the system board.
Remove the keyboard.

Toshiba Satellite P300 Cheap Notebook for windows XP driver

Along with the Dell XPS M1330, this is the only laptop on test this month that creeps below the £1,000 mark. Not by much, though, with the Satellite P300 coming in at a still-pricey £907 (exc VAT).
Compare the two cheapest machines on test, though, and it's clear that the Toshiba is the more striking of the pair. There's a large 17in screen, and a glossy finish to the chassis that includes a row of white LED lights above the keyboard and dramatic lines across the wristrest.

The P300 also includes the best speakers we've laid ears on this month. Provided by audio specialist Harman Kardon, they provide more bass and clearer treble than anything else on test.

Toshiba also takes a different approach to the keyboard, with the keys having a high-gloss finish that makes them feel a little odd to type on. The 17in screen offers acres of space, with a comfortable 1,440 x 900 resolution, but it lacks the VAIO's vibrancy.

Inside, there's an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor, which runs at 2.5GHz. It propelled the Toshiba to a score of 1.11 in our 2D benchmarks - but it's some way behind the fastest laptops here. And for playing games, the Toshiba also lags behind its rivals with a score of 15fps in our medium-quality Crysis benchmark.

When you have just installed Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 into Toshiba Satellite Notebook and your audio not working, you may follow this simple step.

a. You have to change CSDVersion registry key.
Go to "Start"-"Run" and type "regedit" and then click "OK"
Select plus signs on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" -> plus sign on "SYSTEM" -"Current Control Set" -"Control" - choose "Windows", on the right panel, select "CSDVersion" and right mouse clic k for "Modify". You may find the value is "300" CHANGE IT TO "200".
directly: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\WINDOWS\CSDVersion

b. Reboot your Toshiba notebooks
c. You have to installing this HD Audio Hotfix "download from here"
d. Follow (A) method again to change CSDVersion key value from “200″ to “300″.
e. Reboot your laptop

Tips for Toshiba notebook maintenance

Though the popularity and usage of notebooks has grown with consumers and pro-sumers alike, maintaining one's laptop to keep it running smoothly is another matter.

Human beings may be masters of their environment -- computing and computers in general speak well to that fact -- but keeping laptops clean and humming is either a cumbersome task or one that is greatly misunderstood.

Like any mechanical device in your home or office (or both), there are a few things a user can do to keep it from being sent to the repair shop frequently.

For beginners, don't touch and apply pressure to the notebook's LCD screen with bare hands or fingertips. Oil or grease on your hands stain or smudge on the glass panel that may be difficult to remove. In order to clean the screen off from dust and/or stains, Toshiba Canada service specialist Gil Vidar suggested using only a soft, non-abrasive cloth mildly soaked in water to wipe it clean.

"Try to avoid using detergents or cleansers on your LCD screen," Vidar advised. "In the event you have a stain that simply won't come out by just using water, then there are foam-type glass cleaners available. Buy one of those, spray it onto the cloth you're using and not the screen directly, and then wipe it clean." Be wary of which cleanser is used, he added, since certain types of glass cleaners can do more harm than good to an LCD screen by leaving either a haze or glare.

Another handy tip: regularly clean out your notebook's fans or ventilation system. Use a vacuum cleaner first to remove as much dust and debris from the laptop's exhaust vents. Avoid using a compressed air canister to clean the vents without vacuuming first, so you don’t spread the dust deeper into the notebook. If you use a compressed air canister, aim at the notebook's in-take air vents and spray in the direction of the normal airflow. Do not insert the nozzle tip too deep inside the notebook, as the fan could spin freely beyond its rated rpm, or you could bend the cooling fins with the nozzle.

"First off, avoid dust and hair accumulation from impacting your notebook by keeping your environment clean. For instance, don't put your notebook on a carpet or near pets," he said.

Vacuum the keyboard regularly with a brush-tipped nozzle, and use a canister of compressed air to blow dust off of and away from the keyboard. Be gentle on the key caps when cleaning. Avoid eating near a laptop lest crumbs and dirty hands leave food deposits and/or stains on the keys, which in turn can slip down into the computer and affect its circuitry.

In the event of a catastrophic coffee or beverage spill on top of a keyboard, immediately shut the laptop off and towel it dry as quickly as possible. However, if heavy spillage occurs, have the notebook checked by an authorized service provider as soon as possible.

Another common faux pas -- particularly with students -- be wary of how you pack and transport a notebook. Many times people will toss their notebooks into a knapsack or handbag before completely shutting the system down, which in turn may cause your notebook to overheat and crash, added Toshiba system engineer Dan Senechal.

And avoid jerking the notebook about when the hard drive is being accessed, Senechal advised. Moreover, pack the device tightly into a proper carrying case.

"Wait until your notebook is fully shut down and the LED light is off before transporting it," he said. "Be sure to pack it into a snug carrying case to ensure it's secured and not rolling around inside a knapsack, but do not over-pack either. Avoid leaning on the machine or sitting on top of it while it's in your bag, and do not throw the bag around."

Vidar recommends when transporting a system, avoid wrapping the power adaptor cords around the AC Adaptor, as doing so will eventually fray the AC Adaptor cords. Also, disconnect the AC Adaptor, mouse, and other cables from the notebook before putting them in the carrying case.

On the software side, Senechal said it is prudent to regularly (daily or at a minimum, weekly) scan and remove spyware, adware, and other malware from the system. Even the top anti-virus and scanning software can miss a few things so it is recommended to scan the system with more than one anti-adware or anti-spyware software solution.

"Too much spyware or adware on your system can lead to hard drive failure," Senechal said. "And clean out your system's temporary folders and/or Internet temporary folders or that too could cause computing degradation."

Regularly conduct disk defragmentation on the system to maximize its computing space within the hard drive. And, Senechal also adds, users should "clean up your start up tab".

"Check off useless applications that launch themselves from start up," he said. "Ensure you regularly keep up with all Windows updates if you're running the Microsoft Windows operating system. A lot of people are afraid to do that because they're not certain what it is that they're downloading, but security updates are essential and you need to do them as much as possible to protect your system from malware."
Senechal added a solid anti-virus solution is essential.

Install Mac OS X On Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804

It’s finally here! Down to earth, simple to read, simple to understand tutorial on how to install Mac OS X on Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804 model. If you read my previous article on this subject, you know that it is possible mainly because of Apple’s move to Intel chips. (Wait, did I write about it before?) Anyway, I did a lot of research and have come to believe that Toshiba Satellite is one of the easiest laptops to get Mac OS X working. And by working I mean full video support, sound, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, usb ports, sound adjuster, battery meter, restart and shutdown. Plus, you can run it all on vanilla kernel (original apple kernel).

Toshiba laptops are relatively cheap. Besides, if you want to spend lots of money just to create ‘hackintosh’, I suggest you buying a real Mac instead. Why? Simply because OS X was designed to run on Apple hardware. You won’t have any issues or problems if you run major software update straight from the Apple Software Update. But if you do the same thing on the Toshiba for example, you might get ‘spinning circle of death’ (ha ha, you never heard of the term 'spinning cirlce of death?; you heard 'blue screen of death', havent you?) after reboot. Some can argue that it’s not a big deal if you use modified updates from hackers (good ones) however, you must be willing to spend some time getting your system up to date. (Honestly, it’s not a big deal.)

This tutorial is for educational purposes only. You, of course, assume all responsibility for choosing to follow this tutorial. Also, OS X EULA states that you can run Leopard on Apple labeled hardware only.

Let’s get to work. As I said I use Toshiba Satellite A205-5804. A little of specifications won’t hurt. So here you go, download it from here.

You will need a modified OS X installation DVD with modified boot loader. It will allow you to load, and install OS X with no problems. This is the result of BIOS not being able to recognize Retail OS X DVD as bootable. For this install, I use ‘leo4allv3’.

Here is what you need:
• Leo4allv3 (Google it)
• Drivers (Kext) – here.
• Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo Update with Kernel package (dont ask me where to find it, Google it)

1. Burn your leo4allv3 ISO to a DVD

2. Changing BIOS Settings:
• In BIOS settings, make sure DVD drive is selected as the first booting device. This is required in order to install OS X. No need to change anything else.

3. Booting/Installing leo4allv3:
• Place your leo4allv3 DVD into DVD drive and turn on/restart your laptop.
• At the Darwin prompt, you will read this: “Press any key to start from CD-Rom, or press F8 to enter start up options…” You need to press F8 and type ‘-v’ (without ‘) and press ‘Enter’ to load OS X in verbose mode. After few minutes you should see a window with a choice of different languages. Choose your own and click on ‘next’ button.
• After you see a ‘Welcome Screen’, make sure you don’t click on ‘Continue’ button yet. You need to format your hard drive first. Go to ‘Utilities → Disc utility’. (You should be able to see ‘Utilities’ option on the top bar.)
• Select your hard drive at the top left corner and click on ‘Erase’ tab (located in the middle of the window).
• Choose ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled)’ from the drop down menu of ‘Volume Format’ and click on ‘Erase’ button. Confirm the erase command.
• Click on ‘Partition’ tab and in the ‘Volume Scheme’ drop down menu choose – 1 Partition. In the Name field type ‘OSX’. Leave the format option to ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
• Now, click on ‘Options’ button at the bottom left corner and choose ‘Master Boot Record’ (MBR), click on OK and hit ‘Apply’ at the main ‘Disk Utility’ window. Confirm the creation of the ‘OSX’ partition. Wait few moments as ‘Disk Utility’ works its way through.
• Close ‘Disk Utility’ by clicking on the red dot at the top of the ‘Disk Utility’ window. You are back to the ‘Welcome’ screen.
• Click on ‘Continue’ button and hit ‘Agree’.
• Select destination hard drive – OSX and click on ‘Continue’.
• Click on ‘Customize’ button just before you click on ‘Install’ at 'Install Summary' window.
• Choose these packages: Under Audio, choose Azalia Audio; under Chipset, don’t select anything; under Kernel option, choose 9.2.0 sleep; under (SMBIOS), choose Apple SMBIOS 667; under Video choose GMAX3100; under Applications, choose all; select Remove Firewire; select Power Management for laptops; select About This Mac; Click on ‘Done’ button.
• After you get back to ‘Install Summary’, click on ‘Install’ (you can skip checking install DVD by hitting ‘skip’ button).
• Installing - wait. At some point it will look like the installation process got stock, its normal. Just wait.
• After you see ‘Install Succeeded’ window, click on ‘Restart’ button.

4. Fixing minor bugs:
Note: Don’t let OS X boot normally, it will most likely get stuck on a cycled reboot at ‘Transfer Your Information Window’ later, during account setup. Instead Press F8 at Darwin boot prompt and type: -v –s (hit enter);
• After you see ‘root#’, type ‘/sbin/fsck –fy’ and hit ‘Enter’ Type /sbin/mount -uw / and hit ‘Enter’ again. (it’s going to take a little time to run script, wait)
• Type ‘touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone’ and hit Enter;
• You will need to set up password for root, type: passwd (yes, passwd) and hit enter; choose your password.
Note: when you log in for the first time, your user name will be: root and password is the one you set up.
• Now, after you log in, set up your personal account. (It’s not recommended to use ‘Root Account’) Under Settings  User Account, you will have an option of creating an account, do that.
• As you see, you DVD drive don’t show up, you will have to fix it. There is a driver in ‘Driver Folder’ you downloaded earlier called ‘IOATAFamily.kext_V1.1’, open it and install it with KextHelper. (Google it)
• If you want to change default Verbose Loading mode to Regular, do this: go to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist. Open it with BBEdit delete ‘-v’ from the list and it will boot normally.
• To fix Wi-Fi, install rtl8187b drive from the Drivers folder. Restart if needed. Go to 'system/library/extensions folder and find rtl8187.kext' Open it with TextMate and find this line: 33161 and change numbers to 33175. Restart your computer. (Don’t freak out if you don’t see your Wi-Fi connection yet, you will have to install 10.5.3 combo update to make it work as it should!)

5. Updating to 10.5.3:
• Open your folder with Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo Update, and double click on Kalyway UpdCombo10.5.3.pkg to initiate install. Confirm it by entering your password. Note: Do not click on ‘Restart’ after successful install, as it most likely give you lots of problems on boot. Rather leave the window open and navigate to ‘Kalyway10.5.3 Kernel’ (it should have been in the same folder with kalyway combo update). Double click on it to open the installer, and install it WITHOUT selecting any kernel versions. Close the window, get back to 10.5.3 Combo Update window and click on ‘Restart’. (You should be able to restart successfully)
• Power management will not work after 10.5.3 update. To make it work, install Power Management 10.5.3 fix from drivers’ folder.

6. Updating to 10.5.4:
• Navigate to Apple Software Update from your desktop by clicking on ‘Apple’ logo at the top left corner and choosing ‘Software Update’. It will check if your system is up to date, which of course not, so it will show you that 10.5.4 is available. Install it and reboot. Now you should have completely working ‘Mac’ running on latest OS X.

3. Due to the CMOS battery connector is very difficult for revoked (because the position of the board is in the laptop, then we seek to use pushpin.
Provide 2 pushpin (press the pin for attaching a paper on the announcement board), then slip each pushpin on the negative and positive CMOS battery that my plastic (green)
4. Take a few regular cable (fiber cable) and connect the syringe needle pushpin negative to positive pushpin for several minutes, so that the short (short circuit) that will impact me reset the BIOS configuration / fingerprint.

5. And lastly, pull each pushpin CMOS battery and return to the initial position, and close the cover slowly and neatly, and then plug the main laptop battery. Try to switch on your laptop back

Tips for buying a new Toshiba Laptop

You will find many Toshiba laptop reviews on the internet today, however, none of them tackle the all encompassing question of how exactly to choose the right Toshiba Laptop for you? The problem with any Toshiba laptop review is that it is looking at a particular Toshiba laptop such as the Toshiba satellite out of context of the rest of the models. As such, many Toshiba laptops reviews have looked at a laptop in it’s own merits without ever having the opportunity to try other models in the range which may be better.

A laptop is a personal purchase. People have different needs, and what is good for someone may not be the best choice for another. I have seen in more than one Toshiba laptop review mentioning that one laptop is the ‘best’ of the range/series/brand. Such claims are false and cannot ever be substantiated. Why you ask? Because a few years ago I bought a three thousand dollar laptop with all the bells and whistles, but after two months I realized it wasn’t what I wanted. It was way to big for what I needed, and the battery life was way too short, and I just did not want to be bothered using it for its intended purpose, so I bought a new one for half the price. It was so much better, not because of its specs on paper, and not because of what some reviewer had wrote about it, but because it was what I needed. So instead of listening to what is said in a Toshiba Laptop review, listen to yourself for once!

As most people know, Toshiba has been making quality notebooks/laptops for many years and this will continue, but rest assured that if you are buying one now, it will last you quite a few years. Technology is not moving as fast as you think it is. By all means read some Toshiba Laptop reviews, you should be educated, but don’t rely entirely on what someone else says. When choosing one model in opposition to another just keep in mind what you plan to use it for. Toshiba Laptop Reviews can only tell you so much, more important is your needs, your intuition and your idea of quality (which Toshiba is renowned for).

Toshiba laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without warning

This is one of the most common problems with Toshiba laptops we deal with.

Indications of laptop overheating problem:

1. The keyboard and the bottom of your laptop are very hot when the laptop is working.
2. The CPU fans are working all the time at maximum rotation speed and operate much louder than before.
3. The laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without warning. When it just started, the laptop was shutting down after 1-2 hours and how it shuts down after 5-10 minutes of operation.
4. The laptop works fine when it runs idle, but shuts down as soon as you start using any memory demanding applications (DVD player, image editing software, video editing software, etc.).

Solution:

If the CPU heatsink is not clogged with dust and lint completely, you can use canned air and just blow it inside the laptop through the openings on the bottom and on the sides. It’s nice as a precaution measure, but it might not work if your laptop already has a problem and the heatsink is completely clogged.

1. Open the laptop case, so you can access the CPU fan and the heatsink. In some cases you can access the heatsink through the latch on the bottom of the laptop. Sometimes (for example Toshiba Satellite A70/A75) you have to open the laptop case all the way down.
2. Carefully disconnect the fan cables on the system board and remove the fan. If the fan makes unusual sound when it spins (grinding sound), I would recommend to replace the fan.
3. Clean the fan and the heatsink with compressed air.
4. I would also recommend removing old thermal grease from the CPU and applying new grease for better heat conductivity.

UPDATE: I just received a nice tip from MC N’Colorado. I think it could be useful for all of you with guys:

I decided to use a shop vac to suck the dust out and it worked. I tested it by letting the machine run all night and it worked. It’s been a couple of weeks now and I’m glad I did it. I was ready to take the machine apart, now I’m glad I didn’t. I’d suggest you use a heavy duty shop vac to clean out the fan and heat sinks first.

I agree. Try to fix the problem without taking the laptop apart first but I would recommend using a powerful air compressor instead of a vacuum cleaner.

If your laptop is still under warranty, you can take it to any Toshiba Authorize Service Provider and fix the problem at no charge to you.
